AMTIX! is THE magazine for the discerning Amstrad owner, combining the best in games reviews and technical know how, coping with adventures and strategy, your problems and ours!

AMTIX! was a British magazine that ran from October 1985 to April 1987. 19 issues was published in total. Of which, a special issue (Issue zero) was given away free.

After April 1987, the name Amtix! didn't fully disappear: From May 1987 until August 1988 the Computing with the Amstrad magazine (issues 29..44) did have the text "Incorporating Amtix!" on their covers.
News of Database Publication's purchase of Amtix! was announced in other magazines, such as The Amstrad User and CWTA Australia.

The magazine was revived in 2021 by Fusion Retro Books in a bi-monthly format, as AmtixCPC Micro Action. Issue 1 was released in August 2021 and the first annual (collecting articles from the first five issues plus 30 pages of new content) was released in December 2022.

ZoeRobinson:

Hi! I'm Zoe Kirk-Robinson, and I do stuff. I got my first CPC 464 in 1985 and was hooked right away. In the early nineties I launched my own PD library, initially calling it Robin PD but quickly changing that to Technol PD (I thought it sounded cool and futuristic at the time) when it turned out there already was a Robin PD.

I wrote a fair amount of text adventures that were released through Technol PD, notably:
* The Troll – A medieval fantasy about a hunter tasked with tracking down and defeating a troll
* The Maze – A fantasy adventure where you were stuck in a maze with a vast array of fantastic creatures and had to escape
* Treble-N – An urban fantasy tale where you were tasked with uncovering a magic conspiracy to destroy a small town. One of my personal favourites.
* Splitship – A sci-fi tale where you had to uncover how and why your spaceship had been duplicated, then restore the original ship from its two duplicates before they disintegrated.
* The Life of Nob T. Mouse – an early outing for the characters from my first webcomic. You played as Nob Mouse and you had to escape his home in order to defeat Frederick’s evil plans to destroy Blob City.

My latest games are:
* The Quest For The CPCine Disk of Power!, a short choose-your-own-adventure style game written in BASIC.
* The Arbiter: Episode 1, a text adventure written in BASIC live on YouTube.
* Roland Goes Rescuing, a short action game written in BASIC in a couple of hours, as a way to pass some time over Christmas.
* Dirk Headstrong and the Martian Madness, an action-adventure game written in 3D Construction Kit live on YouTube.
You can download a copy of these new games from this wiki.

I also tried creating a 3D adventure game using 3D Construction Kit. Part one was released as Nob 2: The Legend of the Mouse but the full story was never completed. If anyone has a copy of part one still knocking around, I would love to see it again.

In more recent times, I produce CPCine, the Amstrad CPC Video Magazine on YouTube. It's a documentary series that charts the life of the CPC one month at a time, from its release in 1984 to its eventual demise (and very likely beyond that, too). You can see the show from this YouTube Playlist.

I also collate the list of Missing software, a project that seeks to identify all the games, applications, educational software and other programs that were published (or at the very least, announced for release) for the Amstrad CPC and Plus computers but which never made it into preservation.

Block 9 is a disk-based fanzine for the Amstrad CPC and Plus ranges of computers. It began life in the early 1990s as a print fanzine but is now distributed via the Internet. The magazine is coded by Zoë Kirk-Robinson, the former editor of the original print run of issues.

History
Block 9 began life as a joint Amstrad/Spectrum fanzine written on a typewriter, with accompanying hand-drawn artwork. The fanzine had a highly irregular production schedule, with three issues being released from January to February 1992. A total of six issues were produced between 1991 and 1993, after which the fanzine was rolled into successor 8/16-bit fanzine Sector Nine.

Block 9 attempted to cater to both gamer and serious computer users. It featured game reviews, short type-ins by the writing team, hardware reviews, hint & tips, and a letters page that was usually populated by characters created by the writing team solely for the purpose of telling jokes. The visual style was quite obvious in its aping of magazines such as Amstrad Action.

The fanzine made regular references to its covertape, which never actually existed. These references ranged from a space being reserved for the tape on the front cover, to outrageous claims about the contents of the previous issue's tape in the letters page. One notable letter praised the cutting-edge nature of the tape's "holographic elephant display".
Block 9 re-emerged in January 2000 as a disk magazine, written by Zoë Kirk-Robinson, the editor of the previous print editions. This version of the magazine is entirely focussed on the Amstrad CPC, with only one small "off topic" section covering other machines. Each issue of the 'zine is accompanied by a free game.

Roland Goes Rescuing is a 20-level action game written in BASIC by Zoe Robinson. The game was written in a couple of hours over the 2019 Christmas holiday, partly as a coding challenge and partly to pass some time. It uses the CPC's ability to overlay characters on top of one-another in order to emulate sprites in BASIC.

The objective of the game is to recover the Amstrad CPC 464s that have been stolen by a bunch of Goblins who were masquerading as Santa's Elves. You play as Roland and you must collect all four CPCs on each of the 20 levels, without colliding with the Goblins. If you are successful, Roland can have a rest.

The game supports joystick and keyboard controls and features redefineable keys.

Programming
The game is coded in BASIC using a simple game loop that checks for specific keypresses and executes one of a limited number of results based on the keypress detected. The most notable part of the game code is the use of strings to store the sprite data as a series of CHR$ commands. These commands are recognised by the CPC as firmware commands to change the location of the cursor, disable automatic overwriting of whatever is on the screen, change the pen colour and other useful tools. When strung together, the "special character" commands allow multicoloured symbols to be created by overlaying characters on top of one-another, which is how the game generates its sprites..

* Roland Goes Rescuing a short action game written in BASIC in a couple of hours, as a way to pass some time over Christmas.

Draw Utility is a type-in art program from the 5 January 1985 issue of Personal Computer News (UK). The program is part drawing tool, part graphic loading tool; with the latter being re-useable in other software. The application is therefore able to be used to produce graphics in BASIC games and other software; at the user's discretion.

Controls
The cursor, which defines where lines, etc both start and end, is controlled with the arrow keys. The program has a number of features, each accessed via a single keypress.

* P - Select a Picture (from 0 to 9)
* D - Draw the selected picture on screen
* F - Finish the selected picture and move on to the next
* L - Set the starting point for drawing a line or arc
* E - Set the end point for the line or arc and draw it
* R - Set the first corner for drawing a rectangle
* M - Set the opposite corner for drawing a rectangle, then draw it as a filled rectangle
* I - Partial infill (see below)
* T1 - Mark the first point of a triangle
* T2 - Mark the second point of a triangle
* T3 - Mark the third point of a triangle, then draw it
* Z - Clear the screen
* K - Re-draw the previous picture number, starting at the current cursor position
* X - Delete the last command (clear the screen and re-draw using D to see the effect)
* B - Set the border colour
* C - Change the ink colour
* G - Display the cursor co-ordinates
* U - Display the length of the picture buffer space that has been used so far
* K - Save/Load picture buffer

The Partial Infill Function
Infilling does not work the same way as a modern art package's 'bucket fill' tool would. Instead this function will draw a curve from the current cursor position back to the last position set as the starting position using the line tool. This allows very accurate in-filling, but can be confusing on first use.
The Quest for the CPCine Disk of Power! is a short, comedic choose-your-own-adventure style game written in BASIC by Zoe Robinson. The game was released to accompany the release of episode 7 of CPCine: The Amstrad CPC Video Magazine.

The objective of the game is to recover the missing CPCine Disk of Power in order to thwart the machinations of the invading ZX Spectrum Army. The player achieves this by successfully navigating through a series of multiple choice points in the game's narrative. The entire game is played through multiple paragraphs of text, each accompanied by a choice; with the next paragraph detailing the outcome of that choice.

The game features several ways to fail and only one way to win.

Programming
The game is coded in BASIC using a simple game loop that checks for specific keypresses and executes one of a limited number of results based on the keypress detected. The narrative; the possible player choices; and the results of those choices are all held in DATA statements in the game code.

The game is designed to be simple to modify and use for other stories. By combining the simple game loop with BASIC's ability to read data from a separate file, it would be possible to expand the game or replace the entire game narrative with a new one without having to expand on the original game's main code at all.

ZoeRobinson: Added a link to my new game's page.

My latest game is The Quest For The CPCine Disk of Power!, a short choose-your-own-adventure style game written in BASIC. You can download a copy from this wiki.

ZoeRobinson: Added a note about the Missing Software page.

ZoeRobinson: Added a link to the .DSK for issue 2

CPC 464 Computing (later renaming itself to CPC Computing) was a cassette-based electronic magazine from Argus Software Press. Launching in late 1984, it may have been both the first electronic magazine dedicated to the Amstrad CPC and also the first unofficial CPC magazine; with Amstrad's own CPC 464 User having launched only a month or two before it.

The exact date of its launch is hard to determine because both issue 1 and issue 2 of the magazine are not date stamped. We can make a guess at a launch date of either September or October 1984; based on the contents of the 'news' sections in both issue 1 and issue 2. Issues were released on a bi-monthly basis at first but later became monthly. Initially issues were released with plain cassette inlays displaying a poorly printed 'CPC 464 Computing' logo but by issue 8 (and following the rename to CPC Computing) the inlay was reversible, with a much higher print quality and a photograph of a CPC 464 on the reverse side (see image, right).

The magazine was split into several sections, each of which would be loaded from cassette separately. Initially the magazine was written in BASIC; which incurred long load times and meant each page of the magazine rendered slowly on the screen. There was also no apparently 'Print' command; which made using the (often very in-depth) hints and tips the magazine provided quite difficult without a notepad and pen.

The second side of the cassette contained a selection of games and utilities, similar to the way Amstrad Action would lay out their covertapes several years later. The quality of the second-side software varied but several useful utilities and fun, small games were included with the magazine over the course of its run.

The magazine lasted at least 11 issues, running from 1984 to 1986.

Issues of CPC 464 Computing are now being made available as .DSK downloads, copied from cassette to .DSK by volunteers. The available issues are linked for download below.
* Issue 1 (September or October 1984)
* Issue 2 (December 1984, approximately) [This issue has some fundamental bugs on the disk and will need a lot of error correction]

ZoeRobinson: Forgot to link to Amstrad Action magazine when that is mentioned. Fixed now.
