'''Digital Research, Inc.''' (aka '''DR''' or '''DRI'''; originally '''Intergalactic Digital Research''') was the company created by Dr. Gary Kildall to market and develop his [[CP/M]] operating system and related products. It was the first large software company in the microcomputer world. Digital Research should not be confused with Digital Equipment Corporation; the two were not affiliated. It was based in Pacific Grove, California.

The company's operating systems, starting with CP/M for 8080/[[Z80]]-based microcomputers, were the de facto standard of their era, as MS-DOS and MS Windows became later. Digital Research was purchased by Novell in 1991, primarily for Novell to gain access to the OS line. DR's product suite included the original CP/M and its various offshoots; DR-DOS which was a MS-DOS compatible version of CP/M, and MP/M, the multi-user CP/M.

DR produced a selection of programming language compilers and interpreters for their OS-supported platforms, including C, Pascal, COBOL, Forth, PL/I, BASIC, and Logo. They also produced a microcomputer version of the GKS graphics standard (related to NAPLPS) called '''GSX''', and later used this as the basis of their GEM GUI. Less known are their application programs, limited largely to the GSX-based [[DR-DRAW]] and a small suite of GUI programs for GEM.

Digital Research made the Multiuser DOS utility, which allowed multiple users to run DOS programs concurrently on the same computer.

For a time after December 1974, the date of first use of CP/M, ''Control Program/Monitor'' was what CP/M stood for. This ended some time prior to 15 November 1976, the date of first use of the mark CP/M in commerce. By the time that CP/M was a mark in commercial use, CP/M stood for ''Control Program for Microcomputers''. These dates are recorded in trademark registration number 1112646 at the United States Patent Office as filed by Intergalactic Digital Research, Inc. doing business as Digital Research Corporation on 25 November 1977 by an attorney acting on behalf of Gary Kildall himself. This renaming of CP/M was part of a larger effort by Kildall and his business-partner wife to convert Kildall's personal project of CP/M and the Intel-contracted PL/M compiler into an ever-more-serious commercial enterprise, where "micro", as in microcomputer, was a consistent branding, including not only Control Program for Microcomputers and Programming Language for Microcomputers but also a few years later Digital Research's Microport Unix that competed against Microsoft's Xenix. The Kildalls astutely intended to establish the Digital Research brand and its product lines as synonymous with "microcomputer" in the consumer's mind, similar to what IBM and Microsoft together later successfully accomplished in making "personal computer" synonymous with IBM and Microsoft product offerings. As further evidence that this was part of a larger effort of keeping the CP/M and Digital Research Corporation brands stable in the public's mind while evolving the underlying business behind the scenes, the Kildalls effectively publicly renamed Intergalactic Digital Research, Inc. for use in commercial activities, via only a doing-business-as filing, to Digital Research Corporation. Intergalactic Digital Research, Inc. was later renamed via a corporation change-of-name filing to Digital Research, Inc., which itself continued to do business publicly as Digital Research Corporation for a time into the 1980s, after which Digital Research, Inc. did business under its own name.

==CP/M-86 and DOS==

When the IBM Personal Computer was being developed, DR was invited to supply a version of CP/M written for the Intel 8086 microprocessor as the standard operating system for the PC, which used the code-compatible Intel 8088 chip. There are several different stories purporting to explain why the deal fell through. When the PC arrived in late 1981, it came with PC-DOS, which was developed from QDOS, sold by Microsoft, and by mid-1982 was marketed as MS-DOS for use in non-IBM computers. This one decision resulted in Microsoft becoming the leading name in computer software.

Digital Research developed CP/M-86 as an alternative to MS-DOS and it was made available through IBM in early 1982. DR later created an MS-DOS clone with advanced features called DR-DOS, which pressured Microsoft to further improve its own DOS. Microsoft also modified their application software such as MS Word to detect DR-DOS and refuse to run on it. A massive ad campaign by Microsoft in 1990, promising rapid delivery of MS-DOS version 5.0, suppressed sales of DR DOS 5. When MS-DOS 5.0 arrived over a year later, it was missing several promised features and was significantly inferior to DR DOS 5. Digital Research then released DR DOS 6, and again Microsoft "pre-announced" their "soon-to-arrive" Version 6.0.

Unable to match the millions of dollars of Microsoft's advertising budget Digital Research eventually sold the platform and all rights to Novell.

In a 1991 interview in ''Computer Reseller News'', Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates stated that "Digital Research only exists to duplicate Microsoft operating systems." However, a lawsuit over Microsoft practices related to DR-DOS and CP/M-86 led to a $150,000,000 payment by Microsoft to Caldera Systems, who had bought the platform from Novell.

Hi everybody.. Nice to see so much activity the last two weeks... wow we are now the largest 8bit wiki!
And I hope it will stay this way! I am in the process of scanning my remaining manuals(about 12)..

I have talked with Ygdrazil about putting all known demos on wiki as stubs complete with pictures etc... Any oppinion/thoughts in doing so?--[[User:CPCLER|CPCLER]] 13:55, 11 September 2006 (CEST)

Future Publishing is the UK magazine company whose first magazine was [[Amstrad Action]]. Founded by Chris Anderson, an ex-editor of Personal Computer Games, it has since grown into one of the largest magazine publishers in Europe.

Future was founded in 1985, in the small Somerset town of Somerton, when Anderson took out a £10,000 loan to launch AA. Initial sales were disappointing - verging on catastrophic - but the company recovered to make Amstrad Action the most popular CPC read in Britain.

Spin-offs soon followed: 8000 Plus (later PCW Plus), a magazine about the Amstrad PCW 8256 word-processor and its follow-ups; PC Plus, a magazine about Amstrad PCs and other IBM-compatibles; and an all-format games magazine called ACE (Advanced Computer Entertainment). To accommodate the rapid expansion, the company moved to the picturesque Georgian town of Bath, acquiring a series of buildings dotted around the terraced streets.

Before long, Future was publishing at least one title for each of the most popular computing platforms. ST Format, Amiga Format, Commodore Format and (acquired from Dennis) Your Sinclair were amongst the best-known. Console magazines followed, as did the company's first expeditions into non-computer publishing - the successful Classic CD, which repeated Future's trademark marketing device of covermounting a disc on every issue, and the less impressive Diesel Car. Some of the computer launches also failed to impress, such as CD-ROM Today and Public Domain.

The company was sold to media conglomerate Pearson (owner of the Financial Times) in 1994. The growth strategy meant that Future was the unchallenged leader in UK computing magazines, particularly in the games sector. However, this continuing expansion was soured by problems. Their most successful magazines had a limited shelf-life as, one by one, the formats died: Amstrad Action, for example, was unceremoniously killed off at issue 117, just three short of its tenth anniversary. In time, the other 8-bit magazines, the early console magazines, and even the ST and Amiga titles followed suit. European acquisitions (in France, Poland and Italy) were also troublesome, and even the smash-hit Classic CD fell victim to high-profile launches by the BBC and Classic FM radio.

Pearson eventually disposed of the company, to be picked up by venture capitalists Apax. Throughout much of this time, the chief executive was Greg Ingham, previously publisher of Amstrad Action. But as the company's troubled fortunes continued, with frequent profit warnings and sell-offs, he was eventually replaced in 2006.

Radical Software was the software company founded by Rob Buckley ([[Trebmint]]), selling principally his own software. He was later joined in the company by [[Merline|Angela Cook]]. The company concentrated on games, but did sell some serious software.

After Rob's own productions garnered a lot of attention, a couple of other programmers submitted their games for Radical to publish. It was the most active games software house in the closing days of the CPC's commercial existence. However, games were only ever sold through mail order.

All of its games were released into the public domain in 1997. Angela Cook remarked that total sales in the first half of the year had been less than 10.

'''Ocean Software''', founded in 1982 by David Ward and Jon Woods, was one of the biggest developers for the CPC. Ocean developed not only for the CPC of course but also for Atari ST, Amiga, Commodore 64 and ZX Spectrum. They also were one of the few major companies that supported the [[Plus]] range (especially so since their cartridge game, Burnin' Rubber, was distributed with each CPC+ computer).

During the 80s Ocean was one of the biggest software companies, constantly crunching out new titles. At one point they even absorbed Imagine, an ambitious software house that went bust. A short-lived serious software arm, [[Ocean IQ]], published the [[Laser Basic]] and [[Laser Compiler]] titles.

Although Ocean put out some really good games, they also built a reputation of publishing trash games based on movie licence after movie licence.

In 1998 [[Infogrames]] bought Ocean Software.

Founded in February 1983, Locomotive Software was the software house which developed the CPC's BASIC and operating system, and played a pivotal role in other Amstrad home computers of the time. The company was founded by [[Richard Clayton]] and Chris Hall.

Their first contract was to write a Z80 BASIC for Acorn's abortive ABC business computer project. This BASIC would prove pivotal in their future history, gaining them the 'in' for Amstrad's first computer.

== CPC ==

Most pieces of the CPC's system software were written by Locomotive: [[Locomotive BASIC]], the [[CP/M]] ports, the operating system [[firmware]], and [[AMSDOS]]. All were acclaimed for their stability and design, particularly the BASIC. The main operating system development started in September 1983 and, for the 464, was complete by 14th January 1984. (Locomotive then worked on the documentation, both the free BASIC manual and the [[Soft 158]] firmware manual.)

== PCW, PC and Spectrum ==

Locomotive's association with Amstrad continued with the next range of computers to be launched by the firm - the [[PCW]] word-processors.

Here, as well as porting CP/M, Locomotive was to write LocoScript - a powerful and (generally) user-friendly word-processing package that would be the sole user experience for 90% of the unit's purchasers. The vast success of the PCW can therefore largely be attributed to Locomotive. Locomotive BASIC, meanwhile, made a reappearance on the PCW, this time as Mallard BASIC. Mallard had no graphics or sound functionality, but the excellent file handling from Locomotive's original Acorn BASIC made a reappearance.

LocoScript was the only program for the PCW that did not have to be booted from CP/M, as it contained its own firmware (though many supposedly 'CP/M' programs, such as Flipper and RoutePlanner, were in fact very much PCW-specific). The original version was followed by a greatly improved LocoScript 2 and a set of add-on programs (LocoMail, LocoSpell etc.). The program continued to be improved up to LocoScript 4, with better printed output as the main focus of the revisions.

Other Locomotive projects of the time included firmware for Amstrad's Spectrum models (after the company had acquired Sinclair), the +2, +2A and +3; BASIC 2, for the Digital Research GEM windowing system used by Amstrad's PCs; and LocoScript PC, a PC port of the word-processor which found great favour with PCW upgraders but failed to make much headway elsewhere.

Locomotive was invited to pitch to write the software for the [[PCW16]], Amstrad's last 8-bit machine, but declined because they thought the deadline was unachievable. (Creative Technology's failure to complete by the specified date only proved that Locomotive had been correct.)

== Internet products and later ==

In 1993, Locomotive began work on an Internet client for Windows, called Turnpike. This was principally used by the UK ISP Demon. The program launched in 1995: later that year, Demon bought the Turnpike business, while the still profitable PCW side was bought out by Locomotive's Howard Fisher and renamed LocoScript Software.

LocoScript Software is now owned by [[SD Microsystems]], which itself was once a CPC software publisher. Richard Clayton has become a well-respected, and often quoted, security expert at Cambridge University.

Campursoft was an independent 'serious' software house in the latter years of the CPC.

its best known product was [[MicroDesign Plus]], an upgraded version of the original [[MicroDesign]]. It also acquired distribution rights to some programs whose original distributors had ceased trading, notably [[ParaDOS]].

Campursoft's proprietors were the Kent-based programmer Jess Harpur and business manager [[Peter Campbell]], who later went on to found [[WACCO]] with [[Brian Watson]]. Campursoft had particular success selling software to [[WACCI]] members.

Campursoft was later renamed ComSoft.
