Nurgle: Remove offtopic section

Upgrade of the CPC 6128's internal RAM to 512 KiB as proposed in the article Aus David wird Goliath: 512 KB RAM für Schneider CPC in issue 10/1987, pages 156 to 162 of the German IT magazine c't. The DIY project name is CPC 6512. The mod requires to remove (or disable) the sixteen RAM chips on the CPC6128 mainboard, and to replace them by bigger chips, plus whatever additional bank selection logic.

One issue later, c't 11/1987, the magazine published a driver which creates a RAM disk within the additional memory. This RAM disk can be used in AMSDOS.

Technical
The memory is accessed via Port 7Fxxh, as on Standard Memory Expansions. Since the internal RAM is removed, its total capacity is only 512K (unlike standard 512K expansions which provide 64K internal plus 512K external memory, ie. 576K total). Altogether, the c't expansion works like a 448K dk'tronics expansion (leaving the banks selected via OUT [7Fxxh],FCh..FFh unused).

One half (256K) of the total (512K) expansion memory can be accessed as Video RAM (with normal expansions, only 64 KB are accessible as VRAM). This is making the expansion slightly incompatible with the dk'tronics standard. However, usually expansion memory is mapped to 4000h-7FFFh, whilst VRAM is usually mapped to C000h-FFFFh. So, most existing software may work with it, without accidently displaying garbage on the screen.

Installation Guide
Components
16x 41256 (256Kx1 DRAM) ;replacing the CPC6128's 16 built-in 64Kx1 DRAMs
1x PAL 16L8 ;replacing the CPC6128's 16 built-in PAL
1x 74LS38 (Quad 2-input NAND, OC)
1x 74LS273 (8bit latch, of which only 6bit are used here)
1x 2200 Ohm resistor
1x 470 Ohm resistor
1x 47 Ohm resistor

Step 1 - Replacing the RAM
The old 64Kx1 DRAMs have same pin-outs as the new 256Kx1 ones (except, pin 1 was NC on old chips, on new chips it's A8 of RAS:CAS addresses; aka A16,A17 of linear addresses).

* Replace the old RAMs by the new RAMs.
* Wire pin 1 (formerly NC) of all RAMs to GND (allowing to test the circuit after Step 1) (later on, it will be wired to RAS:CAS A8 in Step 2).

Step 2 - Daughterboard Logic
The original article has been confusing on this part. It basically said that one needs "four additional connections", but without giving too clear info on which signals are to be connected to which locations.

* Replace the old PAL by the new daughterboard (containing the new PAL, and the 2 logic chips and 3 resistors).

Compatibility Problems
* RAMDIS is not supported, not a problem in most cases, but won't work with some special types of expansion hardware, like Multiface II.

Missing Info
* Unknown which banks are usable as VRAM
** The first four 16K bank are (probably) usuable as VRAM (as on all 64K CPC models)
** The next four 16K bank are (hopefully) not usuable as VRAM (for CP/M+ compatibility, which uses them as Work RAM)
** For further banks it's totally unknown if they are used as VRAM or not
* Unknown if it's fully dk'tronics compatible, or more like incompletely implemented Inicron variant
* Unknown what happens on accessing the unused region via OUT [7Fxxh],FCh..FFh
* Chipset / Schematic is unknown

Newer Info
Having a short look at the article, it seems to be all different as than expected:

* There is no dk'tronics compatibility intended - however, c't and dk'tronics are based on the CPC6128 banking mechanism, so they work similar, and to some level there is some (unintended) compatibility. Namely, ONE HALF of the memory can be accessed in dk'tronics style fashion.

* There seems to be no hardware based "Video RAM" support at all. However, there's some unspectacular software based example included that copies expansion RAM to VRAM via LDIR opcode.

The AMSSIO interface is a RS232 interface by the dane, Martin Zacho.
As opposed to other serial interfaces the AMSSIO is meant to be installed on top of the Z80 CPU in the CPC. However the circuit can easily be built on a breadboard and connected to the expansion port as well.

AMSSIO exists in 3 different versions.

A new and improved version is the AMSSIO II.

Technical
Connects between Z80 CPU and mainboard. Uses a 1.8432MHz oscillator, MC14411P bit rate generator, a 6850 ACIA, a MAX232 voltage converter, and 74LS04 and 74LS08 logic chips.

Port addresses, schematics, and differences between versions I-III are unknown (the AMSSIO webpage doesn't exist anymore).

* 6850 ACIA chip

Software
The software for AMSSIO can simulate a disk drive and a printer on a PC connected via RS-232. The software comes in two parts. The first part is for the CPC. It replaces relevant parts of the jump block, redirecting disc and printer access via RS-232. The second part is called CPCSHELL and runs on a PC under DOS or Linux. Part of the PC harddisk can be used as a giant CPC disk via this mechanism.

A spare PC can therefore be used as a method to add a cheap harddisk to the CPC. Although the software required on the CPC reduces compatibility somewhat it works for most well behaved applications and games that consist of a single binary (no special loader).

Software Speech Synthesizers
With some clever programming it is possible to program a software Speech Synthesizer with good results.

* Speech (Symbos software)
* Speech! (Superior Software)

These programs use pre-recorded allophones, unlike as with the hardware based SP0256 speech synthesizer chip, the allophones aren't computed an the fly. However, the overall result is the same: One can combine allophones to produce any kind of words and sentences, the software solution requires more memory and more CPU load though.

Games believed to use Software Speech Synthesizer
* LastV8 (Software)

Note - This list is very probably incorrect (Ghostbusters and Robocop were also listed here, which was incorrect, both games contain digitized speech, not synthesizing. Same may apply for LastV8, this isn't verified yet though)
Note 2 - Does LastV8 contain any speech at all? The version from ftp nvg doesn't seem to have any speech in the intro... though maybe there is speech later in the game (?)

Games using Digitized Speech (Samples)
Digitized sound means a simple sound recordings (similar to modern .wav files). Unlike allophone based speech synthesizers, this method requires a lot of memory, typically allowing to store only a few words.

* Chase HQ
* Bad Dudes vs Dragon Ninja
* Super Robin Hood (Codemasters)
* Ghostbusters - 1bit samples (using PSG volume 00h and 0Fh)
* Robocop (with speech on CPC6128 only) - 4bit samples (using PSG volume 00h through 0Fh)
* Trantor - 4bit samples (using PSG volume 00h through 0Fh)
* Meltdown - digitized intro speech
* 3D Voice Chess - speech output for every move via samples

Unusually for a game, The Sentinel didn't have a plot. A number of magazines did include a story in their review, but nowhere in the actual box packaging is a back story mentioned.

When the game loaded, the player was asked to input a landscape number from 0000 to 9999. After this, they were prompted for an 8 digit secret entry code, (unless they chose landscape 0000, which didn't require an entry code to play).

Before the game started, the player was shown an aerial view of the landscape. Each landscape looked like a greatly extended chess board, but with platforms of varying heights. The aerial view also showed the relative positions of the Sentinel (who stood on a tower at the highest point) and its sentries. Thankfully, the first few levels didn't have any sentries, thus giving the player a slightly easier introduction to the nuancies of playing the game. The Sentinel (and sentries in later landscapes) remained inactive until the player expended or absorbed energy.

The main concept of the game was all about energy. Trees and Boulders were dotted around each landscape. Boulders were worth two units of energy, whilst trees were only worth one. The robot controlled by the player was worth three. The player could rotate on the square they occupied and absorb the energy of any boulders or trees where they could see the square that those objects were standing on. Therefore, to absorb energy from something else, the player had to be on the same level or higher than the object. To move, the player had to create a robot on another square (costing energy to do so) and then had to jump into the new robot shell. They could then turn around and absorb the old shell and continue as before, assuming something else didn't start absorbing it first!

Once activated, the Sentinel and sentries also slowly rotated on the spot, scanning the landscape for squares which contained objects of more than one unit of energy. If they could clearly see such a square, the Sentinel or sentry reduced the energy 1 unit at a time. Therefore a robot would become a boulder, and a boulder would become a tree. Although the player could absorb trees, the Sentinel and its cohorts were obviously a little more environmentally friendly and would leave the trees alone!

If the player's robot fell under the gaze of the Sentinel or the sentries, an alarm would trigger and the robots energy levels would start to reduce as the energy was being sapped. The only way out was to move, either by creating a new robot shell or by performing an emergency hyperspace to a point anywhere on the landscape. The drawback with that strategy was that the player had little chance of absorbing their old robot shell and they might still fall into the deadly gaze of the Sentinel! Hyperspace also cost three units of energy (the number required to create a new robot shell) and if the player didn't have enough energy to complete the jump, then hyperspacing would destroy the robot and end the game!

The total amount of energy on each level would remain constant, so if the player was losing energy then for each unit they lost, a new tree (worth one unit of energy) would be randomly created elsewhere on the same landscape.

If the player survived and successfully absorbed the Sentinel, then an 8 digit code was presented. This code was based on the number of the landscape completed and the amount of energy left after the player hyperspaces to the platform where the Sentinel had stood. The landscape they moved to next would therefore be based on how well they had played the landscape (based on how much energy that had at the end). This meant that they didn't have to play all 10,000 landscapes to reach the end!

On the subject of the end, the only complaint that some players had was that the game didn't actually end! After completing the final level, the game returned the player back to level 000000 but with the access code equivalent to the energy they had amassed.
This game was one of the best of it's generation, with a deepth and replay value far beyond so many productions.

It was ported on most 80's standards : C64 (looks quite a lot like the amstrad CPC version), Atari ST, Amiga, PC and more.

Some new updated versions were made too : "Pirates! gold" (with VGA colours on PC) and a modern PC "Sid Meyer's Pirates!" 3D version in 2004.

It is notable for being one of the (too) rare 6128 specific game : only disk version and 128Ko Ram were supported.

In theory, 464 (+ disk drive) and 664 with Extra Ram upgrade should work. (maybe not ?)

It included a lot of Graphics (Mode 0) and musics.

Games sequences, possibilities and mechanics were varied.

Despite it's ultimate awesomness, the Amstrad CPC port was a bit slow and Graphics could have been a bit better...
As they were probably ported from the C64 version.

Guide to hook up a 3.5" pc drive to your Amstrad CPC 6128 or 664 (For non-techy people like me)

This guide is for people who own 6128/664 cpc's that has the 34 pin EDGE connector type interfaces. I know that people in the UK and DK has the Edge connectors.
People in Germany use the CENTRONICS type connectors also some of the cpc PLUS range use Centronics. Centronics users need a different kind of cable.

Example of a final setup:

What you need (minimum requirements)
- a pc 3.5" floppy drive
- a old style pc floppy cable
- a paperclip or a small piece of wire
- a powersource for the drive
- a 3.5" floppy disc
Suggest you also get:
- pins & jumpers or maybe some real switches
- tape
- Y-powercable (may be optional)

The Cable
By some amazing luck the 6128/664 use the exact same floppy-connector as a old 5.25" pc floppy drive. So all you need to connect up is a old style pc floppy cable that has both the old style 5.25" large edge connector and new style 3.5" small pc floppy connector.
Hardest part is probably to get one of these cables as they havnt really been used in years. You can still buy these cables "brand new" at several shops. If you have a older pc it probably also has one of these cables in it, that you can borrow (and replace with one of the new cables if you need).

Looks like so:

BELKIN still sells this cable, I got mine locally but this one looks like its the one:

This is the 5 connector one, but a 3 connector one may also work if it has the right
kind/amount of connectors.

The pc 3.5" Floppy drive
So far all the 3.5" drives ive tested all worked with 720kb floppies. The question is if you want a drive that is both compatible with 720kb floppies AND 1.44mb floppies. The old 3.5" drives was build differently that the ones you buy today, so most drives today dosnt work well with 1.44mb floppies while connected to a Amstrad. Most importent tho: New 3.5" drives does work really using 720kb floppies while hooked up to Amstrads.

So if you want to avoid troubles, use 720kb floppies only.

720kb floppies are hard to get, so just "make" some yourself from 1.44 floppies. Tape over the little "High Density" hole in the top left (both sides). That way the drive will think the floppy is 720kb only and act accordingly. Usually works ok, but make sure to make extra backups of your importent stuff as these tend to work less reliable.

Tape over this hole picture:

Paperclip & more
All you really need is one piece of paperclip (the metal kind) to be able to make a single short on the floppy cable, but it would probably be better to get some proper pins and jumpers or some real small wires. Also if you wanna do some really fansy stuff, you might wanna get at least 3 paperclips/wires/pins/jumpers. (se later)
Motherboard pins are usually sold in long rows where you can break of smaller parts, like a set of 2 pins, then use normal pc jumpers on em to quickly set on/off.

Paperclips and pins picture:

Powersource
You need to power the 3.5" floppy drive somehow. Currently im powering the drive using an external IDE Hdd USB interface box. These are easy and cheap to buy today and you can get them everywhere. They dont dont take up much space and usually have a on/off button too. Easy to use as all you need it the small Y-powercable to hook it up to the drive:

You can also use a normal PC powersupply of cause, there are "complications". A modern powersupply dosnt turn fully on unless it detects a motherboard is present. So what I used to do was drag a whole pc box up next to the Amstrad and use that to power the floppy drive.

My current setup:

Setting it all up
All you do is basicly the same as if you would hook up a FD1 drive to a cpc 6128. No soldering or disassembly required. Just hook up the cable to the DRIVE connetor on the Amstrad and the Floppy drive to the next edge connector on the cable.
Pretty hard to get it wrong as the edge connector only fits one way and usually the same is said with the floppy connector. BUT .. there IS a few floppy drives that have the pins upside down, so u might need to twist the cable around once .. most likely not tho.

So far:

Note that this type of pc cable usually has some internally twisted cables .. make sure the CPC/PC does NOT have the twisted bit between them.

Setting the READY signal
Last thing you need to do is set the ready signal. This is done by connecting pin 33 and 34. Its the last 2 pins on the cable. Use a bend paperclip or a small wire to short the 2 pins like so (Marked in WHITE).

Like so:

Thats it. Now u SHOULD have a fully working 3.5" B drive !!

How to use the Drive & error solving
1. Power on the floppy first.
2. Then turn on the cpc.
Type "|B" to change to drive B in basic (and make sure there is a floppy in the drive). If the drive spins up and you get "Ready" message, then it works. Dont forget that you need to format the floppy to use it like normal.

And up and running (my old setup):

Errors at this point:
- You turn on the cpc but get a blank/rolling screen? Most likely the pc cable connector needs to be flipped over (pins are upside down).
- Bad Command? Floppy drive detected by cpc but is not powered. Recheck your powersupply is connected and working.
- You turn on the cpc and both drives act-as-one .. and the floppy light is constantly on? Most likely you didnt short pin 33 & 34 .. is the paperclip/wire loose? .. or did you accidentally short pin 1 & 2 instead? Try moving the paperclip to the other end of the connector.
- Read error on drive? Disc hasnt been formatted yet? Use software like Discology to quickly format drive B .. or to quicky copy a disc from A to B .. or make a test floppy on pc (see transfer bit later).
- Disc is write protected error? Make sure the write tab on the disc is down (move tab down on right side of disc).
Two heads (OPTIONAL)
Ok, everything is working so far? Want to do some more advanced stuff like using 2 sides on your floppy? Please note that this is 100% optional and you dont really need it, but i put it here if you you like to solder in a switch and its nice to know that you have this option. Still, probably much easier and less confusing to use 2 floppies instead of doing this mod.

Anyways, right now your drive is using head 1 (aka side 1), but if you connect pin 31 and 32 it will change to side/head 2. Remove the short again to get back to side/head 1.
Pin 31 & 32 is marked in RED on the picture:

Primary drive setting (OPTIONAL)
Another mod that is 100% optional, and most people will probably never need this.
If you have ever tried running software straight from a B drive you will probably remember that you can easily get in troubles (like freeze ups) because the software still tries to load from drive A. Wouldnt it be nice to if you could turn drive B into drive A (and A into B)? Connect up pin 11 & 12 while the drive is on to do the drive switcheroo. Marked in BLUE (sixth pair of pins from the top):

NOTE: Make sure to remove the short after you have turned off the whole thing (or you will get a drives-act-as-one error on next bootup). So you will have to set the 11/12 pin each time you wanna do the drive switching.

If you dont want to do this mod, just always run your software from drive A (and use B as backup).
Transfering software between CPC and PC
Yes, a pc can read and write those 3.5" Amstrad formatted floppies. There is a handfull of pc utilities that can read/write to the floppies.

I suggest getting CPCDiskXP by Oscar Sanchez from http://www.cpcmania.com

It reads a 1 side in about 100 seconds (with verify) .. and writing back 1 side takes about 25 second :) Runs in Windows XP/Vista using a nice lowlevel driver that you might recognise from Amiga- and Atari ST-discs reading pc tools.
Note that you can only use floppies from a INTERNAL floppy drive (a usb one wont work).
Seems to me that only the Amstrad is picky about if you use 1.44mb or 720kb floppies .. the pc has no such troubles, so ANY floppy drive may work on pc (from my experience). Also the tape-down-1.44-to-720-floppy-fix works on pc too (even tho its a bit more unstable).

FAQ
Q: Can I use a FD1 cable to connect a 3.5" floppy drive?
A: In theory yes, but its hard to set the ready signal. Connecting pin 33&34 is probably best done on the drive itself with a small piece of wire/metal. People who can solder will know how to fix the cable itself tho.
Q: Can i hook up a 3.5" to a cpc 464 like this?
A: No. Hooking up a 3.5" isnt possible without some serious soldering and you also need that DDI interface.
Q: I got one of those german Schneider 6128 with Centronics connector?
A: Look at the german site below for pins.
Q: The floppy drive isnt registered at all .. not even getting errors?
A: Try cleaning the connector on the Amstrad.
Q: Can I use those odd format discs on the 3.5" ?
A: 41 track & other Amstrad formats works fine.
Q: Can i use the fully 720kb on the floppy?
A: You need a special rom like Parados to replace Amsdos to do that.

ManageDsk is a small tool which allows :
* Create a empty .DSK file (in DATA format),
* Add some files in an existing .DSK file,
* Extract some files from an existing .DSK file,
* Rename some files contained in a .DSK file,
* Delete some files contained in a .DSK file,
* And since version 0.15, Read/Write DSK files from/to a 3,5" floppy
Sid made a port of ManageDSK to Linux, Mac Os X and other UNIX OS. This port is command-line only but features all the important functionnalities for managing DSK files. You can download it at homepage.

This tool works on all unix platforms, unlike cpcfs/cpcxfs which suffers from many endianness problems and can't work on powerPC, for example. The command line interface is designed for easy integration in a makefile, making it more efficient for cross-development.

You will probably want to use dsktools to write the dsk image to a real floppy.

PC stands for "Personal Computer". The term was coined in the 70s for machines that are used directly by one person at a time. This was a huge paradigm shift over the big and expensive mainframe computers that were common at the time. Early examples of Personal Computers include the Apple II and the Commodore PET.

Nowadays the term PC usually refers to IBM compatible PCs. IBM built the original IBM PC in 1981 later followed by the IBM XT and the IBM AT. Since IBM decided to open up the design other manufacturers started to sell clones of the original IBM PC and it's successors, so called "IBM compatibles". This allowed the IBM PC architecture to quickly become the industry standard for Personal Computers intended for business oriented taks. The IBM PC is the ancestor of most modern desktop and laptop computers. In the early 80s, PCs were rather expensive and not really suited for multimedia. They were not often used as home computers. This changed throughout the 90s when better graphics and sound cards appeared, PCs became cheaper and modern operating systems made them easier to use.

Although the name Amstrad CPC is an abrivation for Color Personal Computer, the Amstrad CPC was not an IBM compatible PC. Unlike many other homecomputers of the era the Amstrad CPC shared many components wich also was found in first IBM PCs and compatibles of the 80's

CPC Loader is not an emulator exactly. CPCGamesCD is the main objective of CPC Loader: a CDROM containing a navigable database with all the games of the Amstrad/Schneider CPC, similar to MameUI, including screenshots of the games and information about publisher, year and type of game (sports, action,...).

But CPC Loader is not only a frontend. It includes tools for extracting and creating dsk images and creating new games collections. WinApe, JavaCPC, CPCE and the internal emulators (Caprice32 v4 and Arnold 2002) support the autotype feature: if you want to play a game just select and enter it in the Explore window and it will run automatically. This removes the need to type run"gamename.bas" etc.

CPC Loader is developed by Troels K and CPCGamesCD and its screenshots are compiled by MiguelSky.
Last CPCGamesCD update: 21/04/2009:
Includes frontend, new CPC Loader 2.4 by Troels K !!
NVG games update 11.04.2009 !!
Includes Snap-Pack by MiguelSky (3576 images) !!
Added new versions of JavaCPC 6.2 emulator !!
Includes Linux version of CPCLoader 2.4 and emus updates !!
Includes Links to T.A.C.G.R. pages of each game !!
This is a wiki dedicated to all things related to the Amstrad CPC 8-bit computer series. Feel free to contribute!
This is mainly (but, hopefully not solely) maintained by Themis Papassilekas, aka Gryzor.

If you have any questions you can contact Gryzor or Prodatron (one of the Wiki-Sysops)

Contribute
How you can contribute? Oh, in several ways :)

* Got any ideas on the content and structure? Email me at gryzor[at]gryzor[dot]info.
* Got any technical knowledge with MediaWiki and feel you could improve things? Please do get in touch!
* Got some knowledge on:
** the history of the CPC computer series
** the hardware technicalities
** programming the things
** the software available - then please do start writing!
* Got any documents describing more or less interesting things that you feel should go here? It's not that easy as posting it here - if the writer is known, permission should be seeked...
* Any other ideas? Feel free :)

Cheers
