Ghosts 'n' Goblins is a game by Elite / Capcom

Information
|-
|-
|Type:|| Arcade
|-
|Year:|| 1986
|-
|}

Summary
Ghosts 'n' Goblins is the authentic home computer version of the classic coin-operated arcade game from Capcom, authors of best sellers including the world beating Command and 1942. Ghosts 'n' Goblins is the classic fighting fantasy story, heroic knight to rescue beautiful maiden from clutches of demonic Overlord. Featuring some stunning effects and graphics, this technically excellent game is clearly another winner from the Elite/Capcom stable.

Game Play
In your attempt to rescue the maiden, you need to navigate your way through various levels of the game which consists of different nasties that can be killed or avoided. You have fire power which is handy, but you also need to avoid touching everything - from zombies to all flying creatures! Three Levels to get through with a big baddie at the end of each to beat and only 5 lives!

Technical Details
* Uses hardware scrolling
* Uses a special sprite drawing method. OR to draw sprites, AND to remove them, this technique limits the colours for the background and sprites: 3 colours for sprite, 4 colours for background
* Mode 0 is used in game.
* Mode 1 is used on main menu.

Introduction to the Plus range
<gallery align="right">
image:6128plus_es.jpg|Spanish Amstrad 6128 Plus
image:6128plus_fr_en_kanga.jpg|Custom Airbrushed 6128 Plus
</gallery>

In 1990 Amstrad introduced the "Plus" range which tweaked the hardware in many ways and added a cartridge slot to all models. The Plus included the 464 Plus, 6128 Plus and the GX4000 video game console (which is a cut down Plus without the keyboard nor support for non-cartridge media). All of the range included a cartridge slot and additional hardware improvements.

Most improvements were to the video display which saw an increase in palette to 4096 colours and gained the capability of hardware sprites. Splitting the display into two separate windows and pixel scrolling both became full supported hardware features although both were possible on the non-"Plus" hardware using clever programming of the existing Motorola 6845. An automatic DMA transfer system for feeding the sound chip was also added but the sound chip itself remained unchanged. Additionally, the BASIC command set for disc access was improved.

These models did not do very well in the marketplace, failing to attract any substantial third party support. The 8-bit technology behind the Plus was starting to look a little out of date by 1990 and users resented the substantial price hike for cartridge games compared to their tape and disc counterparts. However, the Plus machines did sell well in France where Amstrad still had a large following due to the success of the classic CPC range there.

The range was officially titled as 'Amstrad 464 Plus', 'Amstrad 6128 Plus' and 'GX4000' and the 'CPC' (standing for Colour Personal Computer) abbreviation used in the older generation was dropped. However, many Amstrad users refer to the Plus range as 'CPC Plus' or 'CPC+' due to the inherent similarities of the two ranges.
The GX4000 Games Console
<gallery align="right">
Image:Gx4000.jpg|Amstrad GX4000
Image:Amstrad-GX4000-Console-Set.jpg|Amstrad GX4000
</gallery>

The GX4000 is a game console based on a 6128 Plus without a floppy controller or keyboard (although it is actually possible to modify one, add a floppy controller and a keyboard and use it as a Plus). It was delivered with two game paddles (as the ones delivered with the Plus models) and Burnin' Rubber on cartridge (without BASIC).

The GX4000 was Amstrad's attempt to gain some share in the home game console market, then dominated by the likes of Nintendo and Sega. Like others before it, and like others after it, it failed abysmally in its goal. Despite the fact that the hardware was decent (after all the CPC+ series were some of the very best 8-bit computers ever designed), it was a case of 'too little, too late'. Lack of CPC+ specific software, lack of marketing effort and bad timing meant that Amstrad's adventure in the home market was about to end.

GX4000 differences compared to 464 or 6128 Plus
* The master clock is 39.9Mhz (approx) instead of 40Mhz for the 464/6128 Plus. The Arnold V specification indicates this is to give a better picture. This means the GX4000 is 0.25% slower than a 464 or 6128 Plus but should have a better picture.

* The pause button on the GX4000 is mapped to the P button on the CPC keyboard. Other than this the 2 digital joysticks are connected, all other keys are not connected.

* There is a difference in the wiring schematics on the ADC inputs where the ASIC senses the computer configuration.

* The following are not connected on GX4000 so the associated inputs are not defined (possibly high):
* Printer (data and strobe)
* Keyboard lines 0,1,2,4,5,7,8
* FDC
* FDD motor
* Cassette read, write, motor
* The signals /ROMEN, ROMDIS, /RAMRD, RAMDIS, CRTC CURSOR, EXP, Printer BUSY

* When a system cartridge is inserted (this has been verified with a yellow and a green labelled system cartridge), the copyright message and a Ready prompt is displayed. If the fire buttons or directions are pressed on the first digital joystick you see X,Z and the arrows displayed, the same as if you had pressed these buttons on a 464/6128 Plus or CPC. Pressing Pause displays "P".

Accessing the Plus hardware improvements
The Plus and GX4000 cartridges access the Plus hardware improvements, but specific software can be created using the extra features without the need of cartridge hardware (contrary as it was claimed by Amstrad in 1991). The extra features are not locked by a hardware mechanism but only by a special 17 bytes-length sequence send to the CRTC. So, it's possible for everyone to create his/her own software on the Plus, using the extra features available through a ASIC I/O page. Except the extra-features, the 464 and 6128 Plus machines are almost fully compatible with the classic CPC generation. Some minor differences are noticeable in the components (PPI, CRTC, Gate ArrayGate Array) contained in the ASIC and in the interrupt mechanism in vectorised mode.

For details about the Plus/GX4000 hardware features, see Arnold V Specs Revised.

The following Amstrad CPC games have been patched for the Plus to take advantage of its extended colour palette. They are often disk versions that do not work on GX4000:

* Cybernoid II Plus
* FIFA World Cup 2006 - based on World Cup Soccer: Italia '90
Bootlegs
Lately (as of May 2007) several instances ofbootleg cartridges have appeared. These are not original releases and, although they could run without any problems, caution should be exercised when buying. What is more, their collectible/historical value is doubtful. C4CPC is a cartridge replacement for the Amstrad Plus range and the GX4000.

Using a micro-SD card storing cartridge images it also allows direct loading of the cartridge from a PC (Windows/Linux/OSX) through USB.

Features
* Direct access to 16 cartridges selected by dip switches. Cartridge can be up to 512kB
* Access to unlimited number of cartridge images using the provided selector cartridge
* Direct cartridge loading from host computer using USB
* Cartridge file can be in standard .cpr format or raw binary .bin
* Integrated ACID

<big><span style="color:#FF0000"> Using C4CPC on a GX4000 with the original Amstrad power supply may cause damage to the GX4000 please read this forum thread </span></big>

User guide
Quick start
* Power off you Amstrad Plus / GX4000
* Insert the C4Cpc cart with a prepared SD in the cartridge slot, DIP switch facing up on 464/6128, DIP on joystick port side on GX4000
<gallery>
File:C4CPC_GX4000.jpg|In GX4000
File:C4CPC_6128.jpg|In 6128/464 plus
File:DipSwitchToSlot.png|Dip Switch to Slot table
</gallery>
* Select your favourite cart slot on the DIP switch
* Power on ...
* et voilà !

Cartridge selector
CprSelect is a special cartridge that allows browsing the SD cart for cartridges to load.
The main area displays the current folder contents. Browsing is done using either one of the joysticks or the keyboard.
* Keyboard controls : cursors for browsing, space/enter/copy to select and esc to return to parent folder
* Joystick controls : left/right/up/down for browsing, fire 1 to select, fire 2 to return to parent folder

Left/Right jump from page to page if the folder cannot be displayed in one screen.

SD card preparation
The C4CPC is delivered with a prepared microSD card which contains the Basic Cartridge in slot 0 and the cartridge selector in slot 15.
Using your computer, cartridge images can be added to any slots or cartridge selector by writing to the SD card.

The SD must contains at least the following folder tree
* _C4CPC : This is the main folder that contains the dip switch selectable folder.
* _C4CPC/0 to _C4CPC/F folders, which should contain only one valid CPR/BIN file. The cartridge emulator will first look for a CPR then a BIN file and load it to the cartridge.

SD original content can be found in

How it works
At power up, CPC/USB whichever is the first, the uC will check for a valid .CPR/.BIN file to load in the DIP switch selected slot.
* If the file is smaller than 160KB, it will be loaded directly
* If no file is available or the file is bigger than 160KB, a bootloader is 1st loaded. The bootloader will then load the file if any.

C4CPC is powered either by the CPC or/and the USB port. That means that power cycling the CPC will NOT initiate a new cart loading if the cart is also powered by USB.

Cart loading from USB
A connected cart should appear as a serial port (COMx on windows, /dev/ttyACMx on linux, /dev/tty.modemxxxx on OSX).
Windows require a .inf file to install the proper drivers.
Loading is done using a python3 script which has the following syntax :

<code>C4CpcCom.py -p port cart.cpr</code>

where port is the serial port assigned to the cart.

Example for linux:
<code>sudo python3 C4CpcCom.py -p /dev/ttyACM0 cart.cpr</code>

Latest version available in will only work with FW V1.00.01 and upward

Firmware upgrade
C4CPC microcontroller firmware is user upgradable through the USB port and requires the following tools and drivers :
* dfu-programmer for updating the code
* driver : provided with dfu-programmer windows version, native support on recent linux and OSx

A dedicated forum thread exists for new firmware announcement support and discussion.
Update requirement
Update procedure requires the dfu-programmer software:
* Executable version is provided for windows users.
* Linux users should find it in they distribution repository or build it from source. Older versions (before 0.7) of dfu-programmer have different commands so they will fail to run the UpdateCartEmu.sh script correctly. It is highly recommended you download the source and build it.
* OSX users will have to build it from provided source and script in dfu-programmer_install_OSX. Check the included readme.txt for detail.

Upgrade procedure
Start C4CPC in usb update mode
* put dip switch 4 ON
* connect the card in one USB port
* press and release the C4CPC reset switch

Install DFU driver (Windows only)
*After the reset, windows will look for the device drivers. These are located in the windows\dfu-prog-usb-1.2.2 folder

You now just need to run the update script :
* Linux/OSx, you need to have root/admin right
<code>sudo UpdateCartEmu.sh</code>
* Windows, from the update package windows folder
<code>UpdateCartEmu.bat</code>

A successful update looks like this :

Manufacturer Code: 0x58 (88)
Robocop 2 is a sequel to Robocop on CPC, both being adaptations of the famous Robocop Franchise.

This game was also ported on ZX spectrum or C64, but not on CPC (old)...

It is perhaps the best selling cartridge game for Amstrad GX4000/PLUS range and one of the best game available on this format too.

Yet compared to Robocop "1", this one is more about platforms than shooting street punks.

Like perhaps too many of the GX4000/PLUS really developped Cartridge action games, Robocop 2 make a too important and exclusive use of the Hardwired Sprites.

As a result, there are actually few real opponents (street-punks with guns firing at you) and it is more a question of buzzsaws or lightnings jumping.

Hardwired sprites has too few slots (16 only) which are too heavy and too slow to upload in ASIC for a decent exclusive use of them.

They are more suitable for special effects (explosions, bonus, some small encounters perhaps), additionnal background's tiles (as seen in Switchblade ) or even the player's sprite only.

Yet Robocop 2 remains a pleasant and challenging platformer , with sweet graphics and many different sub-games.

Implementation details and use of Plus hardware
* Mode 1 and 0 are used for menu screen
* Mode 0 is used for background and panel in game
* Plus palette is used throughout
* Plus sprites are used for Robocop 2 logo and the 'O' of 'Orion' on the title screen, any many sprites in game including Robocop, spikes, saws in game.
* Plus screen split is used for the panel at the bottom.
* Plus soft hardware scroll is used. The left column is also masked by the border.
* CRTC values are: R0 = 63, R1 = 40, R2 = 45, R3 = 14, R4 = 38, R5 = 0, R6 = 29, R7 = 33
R0,R1,R4, R5 are normal values. R2 is one less shifting the picture one char to the left, possibly to compensate for the left column being masked.
R3 defines a horizontal sync width of 14 and a vertical sync width of 16. Normally the vertical sync width is 8.
R6 defines a screen 4 chars taller than the normal system values. R7 moves the screen up by 3 chars probably to centralise the picture in the display.

Burnin' Rubber is the game that was included with every Plus and GX4000 on a cartridge, in a bid to showcase the Plus machine's new hardware abilities.

Therefore it was quite popular, although it did not really show off the Plus capabilities, being an early title and all.
Analog Joystick Support
This game is perhaps the only one on Amstrad GX4000/Plus range that supports an Analog Joystick, however, it converts the analog signals to digital signals by software. In two-player mode, the game can be controlled by:
* Digital Joystick #1 and Digital Joystick #2
or alternately (selectable in Options),
* Analog Joystick #1 and Digital Joystick #2
That feature is intended for people who own one digital stick, and one analogue stick (rather than two digital ones). In the "analog" mode, Digital Joystick #1 is not used (because it's button inputs would conflict with Analog Joystick #1).

Disassembly of the joystick code in Tennis Cup 2:

ld      bc,0f40eh
out     (c),c
ld      b,0f6h
The routine reads analogue input channel 0 and 1 for the analogue joystick and performs some checking to see the range of the numbers. Based on this it sets the direction pressed.
A classic CAPCOM arcade game port from OCEAN.

A Direct Disk to Cartridge Port.
This game is the sequel to Barbarian (Palace Software), perhaps the most well known sword fighting game of its era.
No extra Plus features are used. It is not known how different this version is compared to the CPC version.

Gameplay
When released on CPC (old) Barbarian 2 was considered a good game, despite a somewhat limited playability.

Graphics were pretty good yet the Adventure/exploration aspect perhaps disapointed the Sword-Fight-Only fans of the prequel.

Also the bigger sprites and various monsters opponents were quite fun.

The " beheading" feature was kept (still possible against some opponents) and the possibility to play with the princess added some kind of Fan-service.

Some cracked Disk version were notorious for displaying a naked princess instead of the golden bikini. O_o

But the GX4000/PLUS cartridge lacked the 4096 colours palette wich would enable a better choice and greater atmosphere.

Also due to DATA storage limitation (128K Eprom only) the intro pages/menus were skipped, and no gameplay improuvements were actually added (the use of the 2-button paddle ?)

A 3rd game of the franchise (Barbarian III) is announced at the end of the game yet it was never done...until someone do it at last ?

The practise of some cartridge game developers was to put an unchanged game from the CPC into a cartridge for the Plus/GX4000.
A game which had small changes (often just using the Plus's palette) was called a "Almost Direct Disk to Cartridge Port".

Disk vs Cartridge
The most common size of cartridge used was only 128KB which had less capacity compared to a 3" disk.
The standard DATA format had 178K of useable storage and later (1990) disc games had around 210KB of usable storage on each disc.
This meant that a direct Disk to Cartridge port would need to have something removed so that it would fit into the cartridge space.
(It is worth noting that 256KB ROM and 512KB ROM (maximum capacity for a rom) can be used with cartridges but probably because of cost reasons most used 128KB ROMs.)

A small number of games on tape/disc (e.g. Bloodwych) used tape/disc to store game state (so play could continue after), but there was no way to store game state on Cartridge games. (i.e. the cartridge contained an EPROM and the ACID protection chip only, no EEPROM or RAM).

Consequences
Of course this direct disk to cartridge didn't help the Plus range at all and was almost as shameful as the Speccy Port technique, but it was done because it was a cheap and fast way to quickly release games.

Another problem came from the fact that both the 464Plus and GX4000 (essentially a cut down 464Plus) had 64KB ram. As a result using the Plus features to the full was not so simple if the game was to run on these systems.

If 128KB ram had been the minimum then this would have allowed more flexibility for graphical data, sampled sound etc and would have easily enhanced a 64KB only game.

Almost Direct Disk to Cartridge Port
Most games with CPC and PLUS versions are "Almost Direct Disk to Cartridge Port", a "Direct Disk to Cartridge Port" with small modifications. The use of the extra Plus features varied a lot. Some didn't use much, others used more.

Examples of Direct Disk to Cartridge Ports
These games are identical in look to the CPC versions with no use of Plus features:

*Batman The Movie ( Cartridge )

*Barbarian 2 ( Cartridge )

*Mystical ( Cartridge )

These could have benefited from using the Plus 4096 colour palette as a minimum.

Please visit their respective pages to read more about these games.

Examples of Almost Direct Disk to Cartridge Ports
Some other cartridge games looked almost the same as the CPC version, but did use some Plus features. Some examples:

*Crazy Cars 2 ( Cartridge )

*Fire and Forget 2 ( Cartridge )

*Operation Thunderbolt ( Cartridge )

*Klax ( Cartridge )

*Tintin On the Moon (Cartridge)

This was still better than the direct ports, because it could give a more "16bit version look".

Please visit their respective pages to read more about these games.

Examples of games developed using lots of Plus features
All cartridge games should have followed the example of these games:

*Pang ( Cartridge )
*Navy Seals ( Cartridge )
*Plotting ( Cartridge )

All these games were developed with the Plus features in mind, and all cartridge games should have been of this quality.

Side-by-Side comparison of ported games
*Switchblade, Tin Tin on the Moon & Dick Tracy

Price comparison
Thankfully most of those games were known as good games on the CPC. The bet was that it would still be a good game on Plus.

Yet people were not interested in buying an expensive cartridge with no or few advantages when the CPC version could be bought for cheaper and played on the Plus.

UK prices: in 1990 when the Plus/GX4000 was released, cartridge games were sold at £29.95, while disc versions were normally £14.99 and tape version was £9.99. Blank discs were £2.50 each. (Source Amstrad Action October 1990)

French prices: in 1990 when the Plus/GX4000 was released, cartridge games were sold for 250Fr , 150Fr for disc and 100Fr for tape. Blank discs were 20Fr each. (Fr = French Francs, pre-Euro currency in France).

The present and future
It is easy to make a "Direct Disk to Cartridge Port" by using the No$cart utility by Nocash.

A number of unofficial cartridge games have been made this way and some have been even been sold in nice packaging and sold on Ebay. (See Bootleg Cartridges).

It is nowadays a common feature to modify existing CPC games to take advantage of some plus features, mostly the Plus's bigger palette, but often these remain on disk.
With No$cart these could be converted to cartridge and made into "Almost Direct Disk to Cartridge Port".

Most cartridges were the original games released from the GX4000 era so these ideas were mostly applied to games. To apply this to utilities you would need to have drivers to access disc/tape for storage, or include the OS/firmware in your cartridge.

Now that the operation of the ACID protection chip is known, and the development of various home brew cartridge hardware solutions may lead to Direct Disk to Cartridge Port applied to any kind of software or new cartridge games that make fuller use of Plus features (See Converted_GX4000_games).

Since the release of C4CPC hardware it is now easy to make a cartridge that can be run on GX4000 or Plus.

* CRTC values are: R0 = 63, R1 = 40, R2 = 45, R3 = 14, R4 = 38, R5 = 0, R6 = 29, R7 = 33

Despite that, it wasn't a bad game on its own and is considered one of the good racing games on the Amstrad.

Introduction to the Plus range
<gallery align="right">
image:6128plus_es.jpg|Spanish Amstrad 6128 Plus
image:6128plus_fr_en_kanga.jpg|Custom Airbrushed 6128 Plus
</gallery>

<gallery align="right">
Image:Gx4000.jpg|Amstrad GX4000
</gallery>

* Printer (data and strobe)
* Keyboard lines 0,1,2,4,5,7,8
* FDC
* FDD motor
* Cassette read, write, motor

So, it's possible for everyone to create his/her own software on the Plus, using the extra features available through a 16kb ASIC I/O page. Except the extra-features, the 464 and 6128 Plus machines are almost fully compatible with the classic CPC generation. Some minor differences are noticeable in emulated components (PPI, CRTC, Gate ArrayGate Array) and in the interrupt mechanism in vectorised mode.

For details about the Plus/GX4000 hardware features, see Arnold V Specs Revised.
