== The 'Version 0' Prototype ==

The 'Version 0' motherboard prototype was the motherboard originally designed for the MOS 6502 microprocessor.
That board is owned by Roland Perry, the Amstrad CPC 464 project manager by 1983.
The board was shown by Roland in Retroalacant 2023, Alicante (Spain).

== The Arnold ==

'''Arnold''' was the internal code name of the first Amstrad CPC prototype, which was built around a MOS [[6502]] CPU. As they choosed the Z80 based programming language [[Locomotive BASIC]] as a part of the core system, Amstrad decided to replace the [[6502]] with the Zilog [[Z80]]. One of the "Arnold" prototypes was sold via Ebay in 2005.

== The Gate Array Simulator ==

The [[Gate Array]] was the only component of the Amstrad CPC, which was not a standard one but developed by Amstrad. Before it could be produced as a single chip, they had to make tests with a prototype, which was a single print on top of the actual motherboard. Aside from the Gate Array logic, the PCB does also contain the 32K BIOS ROM (stored in four 8K EPROMs).

== The Grey Amstrad ==

The first cases of the [[CPC]] 464 had a grey colour instead of the later used black colour. Probably these prototypes have been sent to several software houses to enable them to start developing CPC software before the computers' release.

According to [[Your Computer]], Issue 11-1984, [[:File:YourComputer841100059.jpg|page 59]], Amstrad did supply software houses with CPCs since December 1983 (the CPC464 was officially launched about half a year later, in June 1984).

==Hardware description==
All CPC models were based on a [[Zilog]] [[Z80]] processor clocked at 4 MHz. Because a common pool of RAM is shared with the video circuits, the Z80 may only make a memory access once every four cycles, which has the effect of rounding all instruction cycle lengths up to the next multiple of four. The system came with 64 KB or 128 KB of RAM depending on the model (capable of being expanded to more). The machines also featured a standard 9-pin Atari-style joystick socket which was able to take two joysticks via a splitter.

Underlying the CPC's video output was the [[CRTC|Motorola 6845]] address generator. This chip was connected to a pixel generator that supported 4 bpp, 2 bpp and 1 bpp output (bits per pixel). The address generator was clocked at a constant rate so the 4 bpp display generated half as many pixels as the 2 bpp and a quarter as many as the 1 bpp.

The ROM featured three built-in display resolutions but many others could be achieved by reprogramming the 6845.

A colour palette of 27 colours was supported, derived from RGB colour space with each component assigned as either off, half on or on. The later '''Plus''' models extended this to 4096 colours and added support for hardware sprites.

This hardware compares well with the other 8-bit computers. In particular the CPC lacks the colour clash of the ZX Spectrum, and clever programming of the 6845 could produce overscan, different resolutions (although with the same pixel density) and smooth pixel scrolling.

The machine lacked either a RF TV or composite video output and instead shipped with a proprietary 5-pin DIN connector intended for use solely with the supplied Amstrad monitor. An external adapter for RF TV was available to be bought separately.

The five-pin DIN connector is capable of driving a television with a correctly wired SCART lead.

===Audio (sound)===
The CPC used the General Instrument AY-3-8912 sound chip, providing three channels, each configurable to generate square waves, white noise or both. A small array of hardware volume envelopes are available.

Output was provided in mono by a small (4 cm) built-in loudspeaker with volume control, driven by an unusually powerful amplifier. Stereo output was provided through a 3.5mm headphone jack, not present on some early CPC464 models. In those models, what looked like a standard 3.5" headphone jack was actually used for connecting an external tape recorder, although later models used a five-pin DIN connector for the same purpose.

Playback of digital sound samples at a resolution of a little better than 5-bit, as heard on the title screen of the game ''RoboCop'', was possible through clever programming of the sound chip. This trick was very processor intensive and hard to combine with any other processing.

===The 3" floppy disk drives===
Amstrad's idiosyncratic choice of Hitachi's 3" floppy disk drive, when the rest of the PC industry was moving to Sony's 3.5" format, is often claimed to be due to Amstrad bulk-buying a large consignment of 3" drive units in Asia. The cheapest drive (built-in in later models) was a single-sided 40-track unit that required the user to physically remove and flip the disk to access both sides. Each side had its own independent write-protect switch. The sides were termed "A" and "B", with each one holding 180KB (178KB in AMSDOS format) for a total of 360KB per disc.

The disk drive interface was a NEC 765 FDC, used for the same purpose in the IBM PC/XT, PC/AT and PS/2 machines. Many of its features were unused in order to cut costs, namely DMA transfers and support for single density disks. Disks were formatted as double density using Modified Frequency Modulation.

Disks were shipped in a paper sleeve or a hard plastic case resembling a compact disc "jewel" case. The casing is thicker and more rigid than that of 3.5" diskettes and the sliding metal cover to protect the media surface is internal to the casing and latched, unlike the simple external sliding cover of Sony's version (some reviews at the time reported driving over them with no problems). Because of this they were significantly more expensive than both the 5.25" and 3.5" alternatives. This, combined with their low nominal capacities and their essentially proprietary nature, lead to the format being discontinued when the CPC itself was discontinued.

Apart from Amstrad's other 3" machines, the PCW and the ZX Spectrum +3 (produced by Amstrad after their acquisition of the Spectrum from Sinclair), the only other computer systems to use them were the Sega SF-7000 and mostly obscure and exotic CP/M systems such as the Tatung Einstein and Osborne machines. It should be noted that some of these machines used drives with different pinouts and care should be taken when replacing drives.

The data formatting of 3" disks was very similar to that of 5¼" disks, and the Amstrad CPC machines were able to use 5¼" drives through their "external drive" port - either one specially designed for use by the CPC or an adapted IBM-PC drive.

A more popular alternative was to attach an adapted IBM-PC 3½" drive for operation in either single-sided 180 KB or double-sided 360 KB mode, although with the later availability of the PARADOS Disc Operating System, 720k per disc became available. (It was possible to patch CP/M Plus so that it recognised 80 track double sided disk formats, too.)

===Serial port adaptor===
An official RS-232-C D25 serial port adaptor was produced that attached to the expansion connector at the rear of the machine, and had a through-connector for the CPC464 disk drive or other peripherals. The adaptor came with a "''Book of Spells''" for facilitating data transfer between other systems using a proprietary protocol in the device's own ROM, as well as terminal software to connect to British Telecom's Prestel service. A separate version of the ROM was created for the U.S. market due to the use of the commands "SUCK" and "BLOW", which were considered unacceptable there.

===Similarities to the BBC Micro===
The CPC has been termed an "improved Z80 implementation of the (earlier) BBC Micro" due to similarities in firmware and hardware. Both used the Motorola 6845 video address generator and the two have very similar sound output chips - the General Instrument AY-3-8912 in the CPC provided three tone channels each optionally with added noise and the Texas Instruments SN76489 in the BBC offered three tone channels and one exclusive noise channel.

The BBC Micro used an Intel 8271 floppy disc controller. The CPC used the Intel 8272, which is similar to the 8271 but contains the addition of a double density (MFM) mode.

The "two cursor" BASIC editing system seen on the Amstrad CPC (whereby holding Shift and using the cursor keys moves a shadow text cursor allowing text to be copied from another area of the screen to the normal cursor) was a lift from BBC BASIC, albeit substantially improved by allowing free movement of the normal cursor.

Both systems provided similar systems of full hardware abstraction through Operating System calls. This saves programs which don't require time critical hardware access from having to touch the underlying machine and provides a level of machine portability for those programs.

As the CPC had its own dialect of [[BASIC]], namely [[Locomotive BASIC]], so the BBC Micro has its own version named [[BBC BASIC]]. BBC BASIC evolved with subsequent models of BBC computers and with Acorn's next system, the Archimedes. Both had their own sets of advantages: Locomotive BASIC was faster in many contexts, had native support for text windows, had more comprehensive commands for manipulating sound, ''etc.''; BBC BASIC had support for procedures (rather than just arithmetic functions), an inline assembler, and others. Of note is the fact that among the numerous [http://www.bbcbasic.co.uk/bbcbasic.html ports of BBC Basic] produced by the company [http://www.rtrussell.co.uk/ R.T. Russell] is a version especially adapted for the Amstrad CPC, including support for its specific graphics and sound capabilities; there is also a generic version for [[CP/M]].

Like most home computers at the time, the CPC had its OS and a BASIC interpreter built in as ROM. It used Locomotive BASIC - a variant specifically written for the CPC hardware which as a result was faster, more comfortable and more powerful than the generic but common Microsoft BASIC used by the Commodore 64 and MSX amongst others. It was particularly notable for providing easy access to the machine's video and audio resources in contrast to the arcane POKE commands required on some Microsoft implementations (the MSX implementation of Microsoft Basic being an exception, which even allowed for hardware sprite manipulation and collision detection).

Although it was possible to obtain compilers for Locomotive BASIC, BCPL, C, Forth, and Turbo Pascal the majority of the CPC's software was written in native Z80 assembly language.

A [[DOS]] for 3½" drives, coded by [[Executioner|Richard Wilson]] and initially marketed by [[Quantum Computing]].

ParaDOS was a complete replacement for the standard 16k [[AMSDOS]] ROM.

The first 8k was a patched version of the standard AMSDOS code, with the second 8k used for the large-format patch code and a user-friendly disc utility (accessed by the |DRIVE command without any parameters).

Among the functions of the utility were fast file copying and batch erasing.

ParaDOS largely supplanted [[ROMDOS]] as AMSDOS replacement.

Unlike ROMDOS, ParaDOS made no check for the presence of an AMSDOS ROM on sign-on.

This enabled it to be used in ROM 7 as a direct replacement for AMSDOS, improving compatibility with programs which unthinkingly initialised ROM 7 alone.

This, however, also cast some doubts on the propriety of its intellectual property stance.

It is likely that ParaDOS would have been questioned more rigorously had it not been introduced towards the end of the CPC's commercial life.

Unlike other expansion ROMs ParaDOS has no checksum in address &FFFF. This fact should be considered when performing f. e. a ROM integrity check or similar. It the usual checksum algorithm is used the checksum is &26.

If your Amstrad CPC 464 doesn't load tapes properly or it just doesn't move at all, you might have to change the tape belts.

It's not a difficult task and you don't need specific or rare tools. You just need a medium cross head screwdriver and a little one. Also a solder and some tin whould be a good idea, because in theory, you have to desold the power LED from the tape deck and then resold it again. You can also cut the wires and join them again with PVC tape, which I don't recommend. I'd rather sold than cut.

First of all, some information. Below you have a PDF file that shows the new belts you might need from the electronic components shop. In fact, there are two belts (main belt and counter belt) and an idle tyre. From my point of view, I would replace all of them. After 30 years the could be broken, sticky, cracked, etc.

This schematic requires a TV with ''RGB input'' on Scart Connector (back in the 8bit era, many TVs have had only ''Composite input'' implemented on Scart connectors - nowadays RGB is also supported by DVD players and 3D gaming consoles, which is possibly increasing the chance to find RGB support on modern TVs).

The 9V and 1.5V batteries are optional. They may be helpful to switch the TV to RGB mode automatically, without needing to activate it via buttons on the remote control. Instead of the batteries, you may also extract the voltages from elsewhere (like the CPC supply), valid are Pin8 = 9.5V - 12V (9V is actually a bit too low), and Pin16 = 1V - 3V.

I will start by saying that the tasks to be undertaken on this page are not for those of you without electrical and soldering skills, but for the competent, the following circuit will give a quality picture and stereo sound through a television set from an Amstrad CPC6128, a CPC664 or a CPC464. It has been tested on a number of different makes of TV (with complete success), within, the age range of 1 to 4 years. I have been unable to find anyone admitting to owning a TV without AV switching so no provision has been made in the offered lead for these old crocks.<BR><BR>
<ul>
<li><b><u>PARTS AND TOOLS REQUIRED.</u></b><BR>
<li>Scart Plug.
<li>6 pin male DIN Plug.
<li>3.5mm Stereo Jack Plug.
<li>6 feet of six core cable.
<li>7 feet of twin screened cable.
<li>15 watt Soldering Iron.
<li>Solder.
<li>Electrical tape (or cable ties).
<li>MultiMeter.
<li>Side cutters, Long nosed pliers and a small screw driver (all of which can be found in any DIY tool box).

<BR>Just in case it is not obvious, use the six core cable to connect the DIN plug to the Scart plug and the Twin screened cable to connect the Jack Plug to the Scart Plug. The extra foot of twin screened cable runs from the Din plug (when the two cables are taped together) and plugs into the socket on the side of the CPC machine. Now that the Scart lead has been made up following the above diagram, tape the two leads together (or use the cable ties). Now you will need to turn to making a suitable power supply for your CPC. <BR>

<li><b><u>POWER SUPPLY OPTIONS.</u></b><BR>
<li><i><b>You will require a Power Supply Unit that can offer 5 Volts at 2 amps and 12 volts at 1 amp for the CPC6128/CPC664 and for the CPC464 a 5 volt 2 amp unit.</b></i>
<li> Use an Amstrad monitor but this to my mind defeats the purpose of a Scart lead -- you still have to find somewhere to put the monitor.
<li>Use a MP2 modulator to supply the required voltages --- these are now hard to find in good order.
<li>Use a PC power supply unit --- very unsightly unless you built a case to put it in and costly if purchased new.
<li>Buy two power supply units, one offering 12 volts regulated DC, the other a 5 volts regulated DC --- again costly.
<li>Use a Spectrum +3 (or a +2A) power supply as not only
can it happily supply your required 5 and 12 volts but the lead you discard can be used to make the Scart lead, as it contains six cores and has a six pin DIN plug at one end --- so all you need to buy is a Scart plug, jack plug and the screened cable. An added bonus is if you obtain the machine with the +3 power supply then you can use the disc drive as a spare for your CPC machine (yes they are the same).
<li> Another excellent alternative and my choice, as a Power Supply Unit, is as supplied by Commodore for their various models of computer. Cheap to buy and with the advantage that they come with a mains on/off switch. 5 and 12 volts DC is available from all units so far encountered (but do check the base of the unit for specifications) with current ratings for the 5 volt supply at between 2.5 and 4.3 amps with 1 amp for the 12 volt supply. Modifications required are the same as for the Spectrum P.S.U. <BR>
<BR>
If you are going to use a Spectrum Power supply unit as your power source then
you will need to buy a DC Power socket (for the 12 volt supply --- the <font color=red>+</font> connection goes to the outer terminal on the socket) and a lead fitted with DC Power plug (for the 5 volt supply --- the <font color=red>+</font> connection goes to the inner terminal on the plug) --- you can rob these from your CPC monitor. I prefer to use for the lead, a power lead (it's just right for the job) as fitted to the Amstrad PCW8256/8512 printer (there are plenty of defective units around for pennies) and to buy a DC power socket. Remove the printed circuit board from the Spectrum power supply unit and test with your meter to find where the 5 and 12 volt points are, then solder the lead and socket to them.<BR>
<BR>The CPC464 only requires a 5 volt supply so the production of a Power Supply Unit for this model is much easier.<BR>
<BR>
It is well worth the effort of making up a Scart lead and power supply for your CPC machine, as the quality of picture and sound far exceeds that obtained through either a RF connection, via a modulator, or a green/colour monitor. Games are given a new meaning when played using a 28 or 32 inch wide screen TV.<BR>
<BR>
<font color=red><u>NB</u></font> Due to the nature of Television design there is a possibility that the lead will not work on every make and model of TV sold thoughout the world.

This schematic passes Luminance to the TVs Composite Input. It's giving only a monochrome picture, the advantage is that it works on nearly all TVs including such without RGB input.

Doing this would be useful only for using the TV as replacement for the [[GT64/GT65]] monitor.

Bug: The 1.5V battery shown in the mono schematic is nonsense; for composite, Pin16 should be wired to GND, not to 1.5V.

Info from OCT: "I recall that when Amstrad Action came up with the proposal for a SCART cable back in issue AA41, numerous readers wrote in suggesting that resistors (most commonly: slightly below 330 ohms) should be connected "in series to the colour signals [...] for improving picture quality" (AA45, June 1989, FORUM, p. 23), so they seem to have appeared overblown in comparison to the CTM644s' back in the day."

The goal of that improvement is unknown - it might alter the medium-to-bright ratio, or, it might be simply intended to reduce the overall brightness (such like when the CPC picture appears brighter then normal TV programs). The voltage/brightness output by the CPC is actually higher than normal SCART voltages, however, the voltage drops when the TV applies load to the RGB pins; that load may vary from TV to TV, and so, the resistors may be needed only on some TVs, but not on others.

The 9V and 1.5V batteries are optional. They may be helpful to switch the TV to RGB mode automatically, without needing to activate it via buttons on the remote control. I will start by saying that the tasks to be undertaken on this page are not for those of you without electrical and soldering skills, but for the competent, the following circuit will give a quality picture and stereo sound through a television set from an Amstrad CPC6128, a CPC664 or a CPC464. It has been tested on a number of different makes of TV (with complete success), within, the age range of 1 to 4 years. I have been unable to find anyone admitting to owning a TV without AV switching so no provision has been made in the offered lead for these old crocks.<BR><BR>
<ul>
<li><b><u>PARTS AND TOOLS REQUIRED.</u></b><BR>
<li>Scart Plug.
<li>6 pin male DIN Plug.
<li>3.5mm Stereo Jack Plug.
<li>6 feet of six core cable.
<li>7 feet of twin screened cable.
<li>15 watt Soldering Iron.
<li>Solder.
<li>Electrical tape (or cable ties).
<li>MultiMeter.
<li>Side cutters, Long nosed pliers and a small screw driver (all of which can be found in any DIY tool box).

<BR>Just in case it is not obvious, use the six core cable to connect the DIN plug to the Scart plug and the Twin screened cable to connect the Jack Plug to the Scart Plug. The extra foot of twin screened cable runs from the Din plug (when the two cables are taped together) and plugs into the socket on the side of the CPC machine. Now that the Scart lead has been made up following the above diagram, tape the two leads together (or use the cable ties). Now you will need to turn to making a suitable power supply for your CPC. <BR>

<li><b><u>POWER SUPPLY OPTIONS.</u></b><BR>
<li><i><b>You will require a Power Supply Unit that can offer 5 Volts at 2 amps and 12 volts at 1 amp for the CPC6128/CPC664 and for the CPC464 a 5 volt 2 amp unit.</b></i>
<li> Use an Amstrad monitor but this to my mind defeats the purpose of a Scart lead -- you still have to find somewhere to put the monitor.
<li>Use a MP2 modulator to supply the required voltages --- these are now hard to find in good order.
<li>Use a PC power supply unit --- very unsightly unless you built a case to put it in and costly if purchased new.
<li>Buy two power supply units, one offering 12 volts regulated DC, the other a 5 volts regulated DC --- again costly.
<li>Use a Spectrum +3 (or a +2A) power supply as not only
can it happily supply your required 5 and 12 volts but the lead you discard can be used to make the Scart lead, as it contains six cores and has a six pin DIN plug at one end --- so all you need to buy is a Scart plug, jack plug and the screened cable. An added bonus is if you obtain the machine with the +3 power supply then you can use the disc drive as a spare for your CPC machine (yes they are the same).
<li> Another excellent alternative and my choice, as a Power Supply Unit, is as supplied by Commodore for their various models of computer. Cheap to buy and with the advantage that they come with a mains on/off switch. 5 and 12 volts DC is available from all units so far encountered (but do check the base of the unit for specifications) with current ratings for the 5 volt supply at between 2.5 and 4.3 amps with 1 amp for the 12 volt supply. Modifications required are the same as for the Spectrum P.S.U. <BR>
<BR>
If you are going to use a Spectrum Power supply unit as your power source then
you will need to buy a DC Power socket (for the 12 volt supply --- the <font color=red>+</font> connection goes to the outer terminal on the socket) and a lead fitted with DC Power plug (for the 5 volt supply --- the <font color=red>+</font> connection goes to the inner terminal on the plug) --- you can rob these from your CPC monitor. I prefer to use for the lead, a power lead (it's just right for the job) as fitted to the Amstrad PCW8256/8512 printer (there are plenty of defective units around for pennies) and to buy a DC power socket. Remove the printed circuit board from the Spectrum power supply unit and test with your meter to find where the 5 and 12 volt points are, then solder the lead and socket to them.<BR>
<BR>The CPC464 only requires a 5 volt supply so the production of a Power Supply Unit for this model is much easier.<BR>
<BR>
It is well worth the effort of making up a Scart lead and power supply for your CPC machine, as the quality of picture and sound far exceeds that obtained through either a RF connection, via a modulator, or a green/colour monitor. Games are given a new meaning when played using a 28 or 32 inch wide screen TV.<BR>

<font color=red><u>NB</u></font> Due to the nature of Television design there is a possibility that the lead will not work on every make and model of TV sold thoughout the world.

This schematic passes Luminance to the TVs Composite Input. It's giving only a monochrome picture, the advantage is that it works on nearly all TVs including such without RGB input.

Doing this would be useful only for using the TV as replacement for the [[GT64/GT65]] monitor.

Bug: The 1.5V battery shown in the mono schematic is nonsense; for composite, Pin16 should be wired to GND, not to 1.5V.

Info from OCT: "I recall that when Amstrad Action came up with the proposal for a SCART cable back in issue AA41, numerous readers wrote in suggesting that resistors (most commonly: slightly below 330 ohms) should be connected "in series to the colour signals [...] for improving picture quality" (AA45, June 1989, FORUM, p. 23), so they seem to have appeared overblown in comparison to the CTM644s' back in the day."

The goal of that improvement is unknown - it might alter the medium-to-bright ratio, or, it might be simply intended to reduce the overall brightness (such like when the CPC picture appears brighter then normal TV programs). The voltage/brightness output by the CPC is actually higher than normal SCART voltages, however, the voltage drops when the TV applies load to the RGB pins; that load may vary from TV to TV, and so, the resistors may be needed only on some TVs, but not on others.

You have entered into a vast and dark mysterious tomb.

You find yourself right at the lowest level of the tomb and must endeavour to find your way through the maze to the top encountering may hostile beings who are out to get you.

Be brave and fearless as you climb your way through the numerous levels but BEWARE.....

Your strength will fade as you are confronted with monsters, acid drops, mummies, rats, skeletons, ghosts and vampires.

Being the intrepid [[Roland]], you are able to jump over the rats to escape them and to defend yourself you can shoot at the mummies, skeletons or vampires, inevitably killing them.

But shooting the ghosts merely frightens them away and there is no escape from them.

== Background ==
The software wing of [[Amstrad]], '''Amsoft''' was created with one very specific goal: to get software on the shelves for the launch of the [[CPC old generation|CPC 464]]. [[Amstrad]] owner [[Alan M. Sugar|Alan Sugar]] viewed this as a key component of his strategy for entering the already crowded British home micro market in the mid-1980s. [[Alan M. Sugar|Sugar]] was determined not to make the same mistake as the people behind already doomed machines like the [[Dragon 32]] and [[Oric]] and saw a strong software base as a necessity if he was to break the stranglehold of the more established trio of machines being produced by [[Acorn]], [[Commodore]] and [[Sinclair]].

This domination of the home micro market made it difficult for any manufacturer to make an impact, particularly a new start in the industry, as the software industry in the UK had not reached its full potential by this point and those companies who had began to establish themselves were mostly unwilling to take a gamble on the expensive production of software for a machine with no user base.

[[Alan M. Sugar|Sugar]]'s idea was to take a calculated risk. He reasoned that with the amount of money being invested into producing the machine, a dedicated software wing would be a relatively low additional cost with a potentially high yield return - if his software company got a cut of every game sold then they would soon re-coup at least part of the expenditure particularly when the user base grew enough to have third party developers approaching '''Amsoft''' to publish their games.

Amsoft was also place in charge of administrating and running the [[Amstrad User Club]] and the publication of [[Amstrad Computer User]].

=== Early Days ===

'''Amsoft''' and its management team, headed up by [[Roland Perry]] and [[William Poel]] both of whom were still heavilly involved in the development of the [[CPC 464]] itself, were given a straight forward brief of getting as much software on to the shelves as possible to support the launch and first years of the machine's life, with a minimum of regard given to the actual quality of the software itself.

Prior to the machine’s launch, the company approached a number of software houses who had made a name for themselves developing for the [[ZX Spectrum]] and [[C64]], provided them with prototype [[CPC]]’s and commissioned the companies to produce software that could support the machine.

Every game and program produced was sold under the '''Amsoft''' label with developers given a credit on the uniform loading screens and spine of the cassette inlay along with a unique [[Amsoft SOFT Numbers|SOFT Number]], all of which helped make the programs stand out on the crowded computer shop shelves.

Unfortunately, despite a raft of quality games like ''[[Manic Miner]]'', ''[[Pyjamarama]]'' and ''[[Codename MAT]]'' appearing under the label's distinct and brightly coloured livery, '''Amsoft''' quickly developed a bit of a bad reputation in the industry from both frustrated developers unhappy with the cut of profits being taken by '''Amsoft''' through to the games players themselves who became disgruntled at paying top prices (£8.95 per game at a time when new [[ZX Spectrum]] releases were priced at £5.95) for poor titles.

As a result companies such as [[Ocean]] and [[Elite Systems]] decided to strike out on their own, releasing their games under their own labels as they did with other machines, now that the user base had begun to be established.

=== Roland ===

The earliest success for Amsoft, and it's biggest legacy, was the [[Roland]] series. Named after [[Roland Perry]], the character was used as the basis for a number of games none of which (with the exception of ''[[Roland in Time]]'' and ''[[Roland in Space]]'') had anything to do with each other! Instead, the Roland brand was added almost arbitrarily to a selection of games from different developers and all of which sold by the bucket load, regardless of the quality of game itself.

[[Roland]]’s status as a [[CPC]] icon was firmly established when two of the titles, ''[[Roland on the Ropes]]'' and ''[[Roland in the Caves]]'', were sold as part of the CPC 464 bundle from the beginning of 1985 making [[Roland]]’s games amongst the first played by a large proportion of the [[CPC]] games playing market.

Despite this success and his popularity, the [[Roland]] character was shelved as the company attempted to shed the image it had created for itself of allowing any game to be published under their name. [[Roland]] was felt to be indicative of this approach and he was quietly phased out following the release of ''[[Roland in Space]]''.

=== Decline ===

The loss of so many early supporters of the CPC as developers was a blow to the company. As well as [[Ocean]] and [[Elite Systems]], the company’s working relationships with [[Kuma Computers|Kuma]], [[Durell Software|Durell]], [[Mikro-Gen]] and [[Software Projects]] also soured with each of those companies breaking away from the partnership and releasing games under their own banner.

Some of these break-ups were due to the tough negotiating stance taken by '''Amsoft''' who refused to be drawn into making bids for ‘expensive’ software when a cheaper alternative could be sought elsewhere. The most infamous example of this being their decision to not even tender a bid for the rights to produce a [[CPC]] version of [[Elite]], arguably the most successful 8-bit game of all time.

Not even the re-packaging of their basic ''[[Snooker]]'' and ''[[Pool]]'' games with celebrity endorsement from World Champion Snooker player, Alex ‘Hurricane’ Higgins could turn their fortunes around. Something had to be done to stop the rot.

=== Amsoft Gold ===

In an attempt to combat the growing number of third party developers who were releasing games directly on to the system themselves, '''Amsoft''' attempted to re-establish their position as the leading [[CPC]] software house with a re-branding exercise to coincide with a marked increase in quality that was to prove confusing for the consumer.

While maintaining the regular '''Amsoft''' range the company also began releasing games under the '''Amsoft Gold''' banner. These games came packaged in distinctive gold clam cases and were purported to be the best games that the company had to offer.

Linking up with a new batch of companies who were set to have a significant impact on the industry including [[US Gold]] and [[Virgin Games]], ‘’Amsoft’’ had seemed to turn a corner with positive reviews coming in for not only ‘’Amsoft Gold’’ games like ''[[Sorcery +]]'' and ''[[Beach Head]]'' but also releases made on the old label like [[Beyond Software]]’s ''[[Lords of Midnight]]'' and ''[[Alien]]'' from [[Argus Press Software]].

Almost inevitably though, this was to be a short lived renaissance as the quality control soon dipped again with sub-par titles appearing for the Gold range and the stigma attached to their earlier policy never fully seemed to lift from the company.

=== The End ===

After a period of inactivity, the final releases which, in the past would’ve been greeted by a blaze of publicity, were almost sneaked out by the company.

All the more strangely, these titles were solid ports of high profile arcade games ''[[Tapper]]'' and ''[[Hard Ball]]''and came out at a time when former partners [[US Gold]], [[Elite Systems]] and [[Ocean]] were leading the charge with home computer versions of all the most popular arcade games of the time.

'''Amsoft''' seemed almost apologetic for still being involved in the software business and the company finally pulled the plug on their software publishing wing at the beginning if 1987.

Their final game, a conversion of [[Sega]]'s ''[[Spy Hunter]]'' was never released in '''Amsoft''' packagaing and was later brought out by [[US Gold]] as a launch title for their [[US Gold|Kixx]] budget label, the title screen of which still bore the '''Amsoft''' name – a final reminder of this once powerful unit’s presence on the [[CPC]] scene.
